Belarus, Russia to scale up cooperation in environmental protection

Belarus and Russia are set to expand cooperation in environmental conservation. Cooperation plans were discussed at a joint session of the boards of the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

The parties discussed cooperation prospects in geology and mineral resources management, protection of mineral resources, geological mapping of the adjoining territories of the two states, hydro-meteorology and environmental monitoring, waste management, rational use and protection of trans-boundary water resources.

Belarus' Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Andrei Khudyk emphasized that Belarus and Russia have been cooperating in environmental protection for quite a long time and this cooperation is running smoothly due to the adequate legal and institutional framework. The two ministries also collaborate within the framework of international organizations.

Belarus and Russia cooperate as part of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP) in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA Coordinating Group). The parties are active participants of international working groups on environmental monitoring and assessment.
