Belarus expects decision on Russian gas price by year-end

Belarus' Energy Ministry hopes to have clarity on the price of Russian gas for Belarus before the end of 2019, Belarus' Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk told the media on 19 December, BelTA has learned.

“Negotiations are underway. I think things related to the gas price and other matters will be clarified by the end of the year,” said Mikhail Mikhadyuk.

In his words, the talks are in progress with “the appropriate Russian government agencies”. “Consultations and negotiations are underway as part of the arrangements made by the heads of state,” the deputy minister said.

“You know our approaches: we want a level playing field for our business entities,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk said.

As BelTA has reported, Belarus and Russia have been discussing the price of gas for 2020 for a long time. The parties were supposed to reach an agreement on the price of Russian gas for Belarus for 2020-2024 by 1 July 2019.

The price of gas for Belarus in 2019 was fixed, at $127 per 1,000 cubic meters on the border. In line with the national budget bill for 2020, the price for Russian gas for Belarus is projected to remain the same as in 2019.
